A professional bat control strategy focuses on identifying the roost and access points and, when conditions allow, permitting bats to leave through appropriate exclusion methods while preventing them from returning.
The structure can then be evaluated for openings that should be sealed or otherwise corrected. This distinction matters. California wildlife guidance recommends carefully managed exclusion and warns against exclusion that could trap dependent young inside an active maternity roost.

Sealing the Hole Isn't the same as Solving the Problem.
If bats are actively using a structure, simply closing the opening can create a bigger problem. Bats may become trapped inside the building, attempt to find another way out, or, if dependent, young may be left behind when exclusion is performed at the wrong time.

If there has been no human or pet contact, California Department of Fish and Wildlife recommends isolating the bat from other rooms, turning off lights and ceiling fans, opening exterior doors or windows, keeping your distance, and allowing it an opportunity to leave.
